This year marks the 28th anniversary of “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work.” The event, started 1993 by Gloria Steinem and the Ms. Foundation, was designed to “make girls visible, valued, and heard in the workforce,” according to the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation. A decade later it was expanded to include boys under the rebranded name Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work. Yes, we know the pandemic has meant that many of us have been sharing our workspaces with our offspring for far too long. But for many businesses, sons and daughters are part and parcel to the success of their operations. Of the 28.8 million small businesses in America, 19% are family-owned, and family businesses range in size from two people (including the owner) to thousands of employees, according to SCORE, a nonprofit organization that provides education and mentorship for small businesses. But success isn’t guaranteed when offspring are involved. Only 30% of family businesses survive the transition from first to second-generation ownership, according to SCORE, and even fewer (12%) of family businesses survive the transition from second to third-generation ownership. In honor Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, we have compiled a quick list of parent-child businesses in beauty, home and personal care. The theme for 2021’s Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is “Boldly Moving Forward.” From corporate giants with huge market share to fledgling startups with big dreams, we think it is a fitting moniker for the companies listed below. Estée Lauder Companies Perhaps the highest profile business that falls under the scope of family business is The Estée Lauder Companies. While the Estée Lauder Company went public in 1995, the third generation—William, Aerin and Jane—are now engaged in its leadership. Elizabeth Grant Skincare Elizabeth Grant is founder/CEO, and daughter Marion Witz, is president. Margot Grant Witz, Grant’s granddaughter is a VP.
